NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said he is ready for a personal meeting with President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. This is reported by DW.
“If the framework is correct, I would meet with President Putin. It is important to sit down at the negotiating table, especially in times when difficulties arise,” NATO Secretary General said.
However, the Secretary General of the Alliance did not specify on how these “framework conditions” should look.
It is known that the United States, France and Germany support the initiative to have good relations with Russia, and emphasize the importance of the NATO-Russia dialogue.
The countries of Central and Eastern Europe reacted to this decision very critically. They note that a routine dialogue with Russia is impossible until Ukraine’s conflict to be settled.
Stoltenberg is more inclined to the position of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, however, he stressed the importance of dialogue with the Russian Federation.
“Russia is our largest neighbor and will remain so. Even if our relations do not improve, we need to be able to manage these difficult relations,” he said.
