According to the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), in 2019, there were an average of 2.9 fake banknotes per million real banknotes. Most often, scammers faked UAH 500 banknotes.
“In 2019, most often were forged banknotes of the old type with a nominal value of 500 hryvnia (2006 year of issue) and 100 hryvnia banknote (2005 year of issue). Their number amounted to about 65% and 15% of the total number of fakes taken out of circulation, respectively,” the report said.
Fraudsters were less likely to fake banknotes UAH 200 (17% less), UAH 100 (29% less), UAH 50 and UAH 20 (31% less).
The NBU press service reports that counterfeit banknotes withdrawn from circulation were printed and designed to mislead the careless citizens and cash workers of trade enterprises.
Regarding banknotes of foreign currencies, last year, most counterfeited banknotes were USD 100, as well as EUR 50 and EUR 500.
“Fake banknotes are withdrawn without reimbursement of their value. The National Bank shall notify the National Police of Ukraine of their seizure, counterfeits in the prescribed manner are handed over to authorized police officers to conduct investigations,” the National Bank adds.
