No additives, enzymes: Ukraine approved honey production requirements

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine has developed and approved the mandatory requirements for the production and labeling of honey.

The corresponding order #330 dated June 19 was published on the website of the ministry.

In particular, the document harmonizes Ukraine’s legislation with the EU ones regarding the requirements for honey production, which will provide the Ukrainian market with quality products and expand export opportunities.

Thus, honey should consist of carbohydrates, mainly fructose and glucose, as well as organic acids, enzymes and pollen grains that get into the process by nectar bees.

The color should vary from transparent, white, light yellow to dark brown.

It is forbidden to add food, ingredients and any other additives to honey marked as ‘honey’. The labeling of these products may be supplemented with information on special quality criteria.

On the label of honey for confectionery products along with its name should be indicated: “product intended for processing.” The order comes into force on February 6, 2020.
