More than half of Ukrainian adult readers read books or listen to audiobooks for satisfaction and relaxation. This is evidenced by the results of the study “Reading in the context of media consumption and life construction” by the Ukrainian Book Institute.
The research was carried out by Info Sapiens, commissioned by the Ukrainian Book Institute. The study involved 3,900 people.
It seems like books are a source of relaxation, pleasure and recovery for 52% of those surveyed. At the same time, 26% indicated that they read for self-education, 19% read compulsory literature for work or study, 11% – optional. Another 16% read for spiritual development.
If talk about the main motive for reading, then 41% read first of all for pleasure and rest, 10% – for self-education, 11% – for work or study (compulsory literature), 5% – for spiritual development, 4% – for work or study (optional literature).
The main drivers for choosing a book to read are recommendations from friends (35%) and a famous author (24%). Also important are an interesting abstract to the book (18%), language (12%), reviews on book sites and reviews on social networks (11% each).
Overall, 58% of readers noted that they discuss books with others – most often with friends (37%) and with family (31%). At the same time, only 3% discuss them on social networks and 1% – in “book clubs”.
According to a quantitative survey, the majority of readers read books from half an hour to 2 hours a day. On weekdays, they read most often in the evening, and on weekends, during the day. Reading most often occurs at home (83%), another 18% read at work or at the place of study, and 13% – in transport.
