The president of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky presented the Hero of Ukraine awards to the liquidators of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, who prevented a possible second explosion at a nuclear power plant.

According to the presidential press service, Oleksii Ananenko, senior mechanical engineer of the reactor department of the Chernobyl NPP in 1983-1989, and Valery Bespalov, senior engineer of the turbine department in 1986, have received the highest state award.

Borys Baranov, the shift manager of the enterprise in 1976–2005, who passed away in 2005, was awarded posthumously. The award was received by his son Oleksandr.

It is emphasized that the liquidators were awarded the title “Hero of Ukraine” on June 28, 2019 for their heroism and selfless actions during the liquidation of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant on April 26, 1986.

“All three, risking their lives, prevented a possible second explosion at the Chernobyl NPP. Oleksii Ananenko, Valery Bespalov and Borys Baranov descended into the pool-sparger under the destroyed reactor and opened the shut-off valves to free it from the water. Thanks to this, it was possible to avoid contact of the molten nuclear material with water, which could result in a repeated explosion with a high probability”, the report noted.

As The Journalist reported, Chernobyl NPP new safe confinement project completes final test.
