President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky held a phone conversation with UN Secretary General António Guterres. The interlocutors discussed the fight against coronavirus in the world. This was reported by the press service of the head of state.

Zelensky noted that Ukraine supports the UN Global Humanitarian Response Plan, which aims to help counteract COVID-19 and and which provides for the receipt of financial assistance by Ukraine.

“It is important for Ukraine to receive financial support stipulated by Response Plan in the amount of USD 165 million,” Zelensky said.

Zelensky asked the UN Secretary General to help mobilize WHO’s capabilities to coordinate the collaboration of Ukrainian virologists, who work on the coronavirus vaccine, with foreign partners to consolidate relevant international efforts.

The President drew António Guterres’s attention to the attempts by the Russian Federation to artificially tie the issue of lifting sanctions with the necessary measures to combat coronavirus.

“Sanctions are an important tool specifically to restore respect for international law and in no way weaken the ability of individual states to protect their citizens from COVID-19,” Zelensky said.
