Today, on August 13th, the world celebrates the International Day of Left-Handers – an unofficial celebration of those for whom it is more customary to work with the left hand in life. For the first time this Day was celebrated on August 13th in 1976 on the initiative of Lefthanders International.

According to Ukrinform, the left-handers mass movement began in 1980 with rallies in the USA in defense of the dismissed policeman Franklin Winborn. It is known that Winborne, as a left-hander, wore a holster on the left, although by statute he had to wear it on the right.

According to supporters of the movement, Lefty’s Day is called upon to draw public attention to the problems of left-handed people in the right-handed world. It is often a question of compulsory retraining of left-handed children (by teachers or parents) writing with their right hand. This, as you know, leads to psychological trauma.

Recently, activists of the movement are trying to emphasize the attention of designers and manufacturers of household goods to the need to take into account the convenience of lefties in the development of design items or the manufacture of household products.

«Among population, according to various estimates, there are from 7 to 17% of lefties. In some activities, left-handers have certain advantages. For example, in the game of musical instruments, in sports – football, boxing, tennis, and fencing», says Ukrinform. >
