Director’s name of biopic about Lesya Ukrainka became known

Georgian film director, screenwriter and composer Nana Janelidze will direct biopic about Lesya Ukrainka. About this informs official Facebook page of Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

Nana is the author of 5 full-length works in which she acted as a director, and 6 works in which she became a screenwriter. It should be noted that the film «Repentance» (directed by Tengiz Abuladze, 1987), in which Nana was author of script, won the Grand Prix of the Cannes Film Festival and was nominated for Golden Globe in the category Best Foreign Language Film.

Biopic about the life of Lesya Ukrainka with working title «Lesya Ukrainka. Uzlissya» is planned to shoot in Ukraine. Future movie tells the life story of a great poetess from early years to the last days. «Lesya Ukrainka is not a powdered portrait on the school wall, but a lively, passionate, jealous, selfless woman who fights a deadly disease. Every moment that fate gave to her, she managed to live hungrily, «feel», to reflect in her work the overwhelming burden of great talent. I wanted to work on this project as soon as I found out about its existence, because for me this is an incredibly inspiring story», Nana Dzhanelidze said.

Oleksandra Lavrenchuk is already working on the script. Creative group of the project actively involves collaborating on the picture of experts on creativity and life of Lesya Ukrainka. Creative producer and author of the idea of the film is Yuliia Synkevych (JS Films, general producer of the Odessa International Film Festival), and co-produced by Mariia Moskalenko (FX FILM Georgia). «For us, the story of Lesya Ukrainka is very personal. We wanted a woman to film this story. We considered directors from Ukraine and Georgia – as the life of Lesya Ukrainka is closely related to these two countries. We needed a director with a fresh and impartial view – all these qualities are perfectly combined in Nani Dzhanelidze. Script inspired her from the first lines – at the moment we are actively working on it and will soon start shooting teasers», say producers of picture Yuliia Synkevych and Mariia Moskalenko.
