The Acting Head of the Ministry of Health, Ulana Suprun, recommended Ukrainians to eat less black caviar because this delicatessen causing a real threat of extinction to some fish species:
"It is important to remember that the black caviar is a product derived from very rare sturgeon fish, which are now on the brink of extinction. At the request of WWF in Ukraine, we will be more detailed on this issue. Fishing for sturgeon is prohibited in all Black Sea countries. In Ukraine, all sturgeon species – sterlet, biluga, Russian sturgeon , etc. – are listed in the Red Book.
“The main threat to sturgeon is the poaching of this fish, mainly because of its caviar," the report said.
At the same time, Suprun noted that most of the health benefits of black caviar can be found in salmon rocks and red caviar.
