According to the Presidential Decree dated September 17, 2004, the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture is celebrated in Ukraine on the Day of Remembrance of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Ukraine.

Cyril and Methodius – enlighteners who played an important role in the development and formation of Slavic writing and culture, patrons of Europe. The brothers translated liturgical books into Slavic, were authors of original works, preached Orthodoxy, opposed the German Catholic clergy, opened schools at churches and prepared students. They put in order the Slavic alphabet and translated Gospel into the Church Slavonic language (Old Bulgarian).

At the beginning of the XI two writing systems were used in the Slavic world – the Cyrillic and the glagolitic. Soon the glagolitic laid the foundation for the Cyrillic alphabet, on the basis of which the alphabets of many nations were formed – Ukrainians, Belarusians, Russians, Bulgarians, Macedonians, Serbs, Montenegrins, and the alphabet of some nations of Central Asia.

As The Journalist reported, Europe Day celebrated in Odesa.
