On November 21, Ukraine marks the Day of Dignity and Freedom.
The holiday was established in honor of two revolutions: the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2013 Revolution of Dignity. It is celebrated as Freedom Day from 2005 to 2011; Its celebration was actually canceled during the time of ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, by combining it with Ukrainian Unity Day (January 22).
In 2014, President Petro Poroshenko restored the official status of this holiday, since then Ukraine has simultaneously celebrated the anniversaries of the Orange Revolution and Revolution of Dignity.
On November 21, 2013, Ukrainians came out to the main square of the capital – Independence Square – to hold the first protest rallies in response to the decision of then government to stop Ukraine’s course towards European integration. On the night of November 29-30, the security forces brutally dispersed activists on Independence Square, mainly students. The use of force by the authorities led to a wave of protests, which grew into the “Revolution of Dignity.”
