Deputy Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Olena Zerkal while representing Ukraine’s position on the lawsuit against Russia, said that when the national rights are violated, any state has the right to endeavor to resolve the dispute. The Russian Federation is trying to deprive Ukraine of this right. Zerkal wrote about this on her Facebook page.

“Despite the fact that Russia could not convince Ukraine to reach a final agreement on the Azov Sea, it pretends the desired result is still reflected by the law,” the Ukrainian ex-Deputy Foreign Minister said.

Zerkal argues that for Russia the only way to avoid its responsibility is to recreate the case initiated by Ukraine.

“We, like the rest of the world, have no doubt that Crimea is Ukraine. This is enshrined in the Constitution of Ukraine and respected by the international community. Russia also recognized the sovereignty of Ukraine over the Crimea, including legally binding agreements. Russia cannot just appear in the Permanent Court of Arbitration trying to appeal its jurisdiction”, said Zerkal.

The representative of Ukraine also drew attention to the fact that Russia “is violating the rights of Ukraine” in the Black and Azov Seas and the Kerch Strait by building a bridge across the strait, “infringes the vessel” bound for Ukrainian ports or “plunders the energy resources of Ukraine” into the sea, “does not allow Ukrainian fishermen to get to the waters”, where they used to catch fish.

Earlier The Journalist reported that in The Hague court hearings on the case of Ukraine against Russia on the law of the sea began.
