Minister of Education and Science Serhii Shkarlet said that no one is going to cancel the twelve-year school system.
“The rejection of 12-year school education is an absolute fake. The discussion, which has been going on for several years in the educational community about the timing of the beginning and completion of school education, in no case provides for the return of the ten-year period,” the minister said.
Shkarlet explained that the 12-year system is a common European trend, and, for example, in Germany, in some federal states, a child will not be able to enroll in a master’s program if he does not have 15.5 years of study beforehand: 12 years of school and 3.5 years of bachelor’s degree.
According to the minister, he has repeatedly heard indignation from the parents of schoolchildren about the fact that children will graduate from school at the age of 18-19.
“But there are other equally compelling arguments in favor of the 12-year school. Therefore, this question has been and remains open for professional discussion. We must work out the necessary solutions to make 12-year school education work, become convenient and effective for children, teachers, parents,” the head of the Ministry of Education and Science emphasized, adding that in some EU countries, education begins at the age of 5 and ends at 17.
