Ukrainian Health Ministry launches pilot project for aeromedical evacuation of critically ill patients

Since April 2021, the project has been implemented on the basis of the Lviv Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine. Helicopter will be based on the territory of the airport Lviv, according to the local newspaper 032.ua, quoting the representative of the press service of the Center for Emergency Medical Aid and Disasters. A paramedic, a doctor or two doctors will be sent on the flight.

The project will serve the Carpathian region, mountainous areas and parts of the western territory of the Lviv region. A helicopter is needed in cases when a person cannot be transported in no way but by air.

According to the press service of the Lviv Regional State Administration, this will help to transport patients with acute circulatory delay, disorders of the cardiovascular system, cerebrovascular accidents, burns of II-III degrees of more than 20% of the body surface, electrical burns or upper respiratory tract, spinal injuries with signs paraplegia, tetraplegia or lateralization, penetrating wounds, fractures of two or more tubular bones, significant damage to the pelvic bones, polytrauma, craniocerebral trauma, etc.

Interior Ministry employees will provide landing on hard surface. First, ambulances will arrive to the call and will deliver patients to the helicopter landing site. Further transportation will take place to the regional support hospitals. The state has already purchased a Eurocopter EC 145 helicopter.
