On September 2, the Ukrainian national currency, hryvnia, marks its 23 anniversary, the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine reported on Facebook.
“This year, the Ukrainian hryvnia marks 23 years. It is exactly 23 years ago, on September 2, 1996, the hryvnia replaced Ukrainian rubles and became the national currency of Ukraine,” the report said.
The National Bank reminded that the monetary reform lasted two weeks – from September 2 to September 16, 1996, the exchange of rubles for the hryvnia lasted so long.
During replacing of the currency, about 338.1 trillion rubles were in circulation, but the NBU introduced UAH banknotes in cash worth more than UAH 3.1 billion.
Now the country’s cash circulation contains cash in the total amount of UAH 393.8 billion, in particular banknotes – UAH 391.3 billion (2.8 billion pieces) and coins – UAH 2.4 billion (13.2 billion pieces).
