Today, on the third Thursday of May, Ukrainians traditionally celebrate Vyshyvanka Day. The holiday is not official, but it is also celebrated outside the country.
The action originates from the initiative of students of the Faculty of History, Political Science and International Relations of the Chernivtsi University named after Yuriy Fedkovich. In 2006, they offered to devote one day of the year to Ukrainian embroidery.
The third Thursday of May is not chosen by chance. The founders of the action insist that the Day of embroidery falls on weekdays, and not on a day off, noting that embroidery is an organic component of the life and culture of Ukrainians, and not a covered artifact.
On the Kyiv Post Square on the occasion of the Day of Embroidery, a large-scale show “Vyshyvanka Day” is held, the participants of which will defile in ethnic clothes from designer Yulia Magdych or in their own embroidered shirts. Everyone will be able to take part in the national show.
In addition, an art installation “Vysyvanka – Odyag Vilnykh”, dedicated not only to the Day of embroidery, but also to the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression, should open in the capital. The art object will symbolize the “prison cell” in which the embroidery is “enclosed”.
Earlier, the “Journalist” reported that Embroidery Day would be a holiday in Canada.
