Ukrainian control center for tobacco reported that from January to June of this year the sales of tobacco factories amounted to 18 billion cigarettes, which is 28% less than in 2017.
It is because of the increase in prices for cigarettes after the increase in excises duties for six months, the tobacco market in Ukraine decreased by 9.9%.
According to the State Statistics Service, in January-June 2018, Ukraine produced 34.4 billion cigarettes, which is 17.7% less than in the corresponding period last year.
According to Andriy Skipalskyi, a member of the Board of the Reanimation Package of Reforms, increasing excise taxes on tobacco products is an effective tool to reduce the prevalence of smoking and preserve people’s health.
«In total, from 2008 to 2017, cigarettes were sold in Ukraine from 125 billion to 67 billion cigarettes. Therefore, in order to further fight against tobacco, it is necessary to continue to increase taxes on cigarettes, taking into account inflation and rising incomes of the population. This will have a positive effect on the state and contribute to the fulfillment of Ukraine’s international obligations», Skipalskyi stressed.
