Ukrainians celebrate day of national embroidered shirt

Today, May 17, Ukrainians celebrate Vyshyvanka Day. Due to the holiday a number of festive events will take place in the country.

World day of national embroidered shirt do not have a fixed date. It is celebrated annually on the third thursday of May. Thursday was not chosen randomly. The founders insisted that the holiday falls on a working day, not on the day off.
This holiday appeared in 2006.. Its founder is the student of the Yuri Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, Lesya Voroniuk. Being inspired by the student Igor Zhituryuk, who regularly went to university in embroidered shirt, she offered to classmates and students to choose one day and put on embroideries all together.
The purpose of the holiday is to preserve and popularize folk traditions of creating and wearing embroidered Ukrainian clothes. On this day in Ukraine and in some other States a large number of events passes, related to Ukrainian culture and embroidery. This year, a number of events planned for the Day of Embroidery. In particular, in Chernivtsi there will be ethnic shows, charity fairs, master-classes, the opening of the mural «Zastanivska Beauty», transfering of embroideries to maternity homes, presentation of Ivan Dyachuk’s art book «Vyshyvanka for a Cyborg».
In Khmelnitsky the celebration will be held in the perinatal center, where the embroidered shirts will be presented to the newborns. At 13:00 on the Independent Square, students prepare a flashmob «Podillya ornament».
The National Philharmonic will perform a concert due to the Vyshyvanka Day in Kiev.
To the Embroidery Day in the Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art Museum, the collection of Ukrainian embroidery of the XVII-XX centuries will be shown.
At the Ivan Gonchar Museum an exhibition of traditional Ukrainian men’s clothing of the late XIX – mid XX century will be presented for the first time in Ukrainian museum space.
And, on May 19, the 20th jubilee marsh in embroidered shirts will take place.
The «newborns in embroidered» action will be held not only in Ukraine, but also in Canada, Turkey, Australia, Croatia, Thailand.
As «The Journalist» reported, in the capital of Ukraine a concert timed to the Vyshyvanka Day will be held.
