The lowest level of ethnic prejudices in Ukraine is towards Belarusians and Russians, and the highest level of prejudices is towards Chinese, Africans, Arabs; the especially high level of prejudice is towards Roma people.
This is stated in the conclusions of the «Inter-ethnic prejudices in Ukraine» opinion poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, conducted from September 8 to September 23, 2018.
According to the survey, the smallest social distance the respondents have to the Ukrainian-speaking and Russian-speaking Ukrainians (index 2.2 and 2.8, respectively), the majority of respondents are willing to have representatives of these groups as members of their families and close friends.
The Belarusians go next (index 3.3), then Russians (index 3.8) and the Poles (index 4.1). The Crimean Tatars, Canadians, Jews, Germans and Americans have approximately the same social distance of 4.4-4.5 index.
The Chinese (5.3), Africans (5.4) Arabs (5.5) are closing the hierarchy of social distances. The last place took Roma people with 5.7 index.
Sociologists also noted that xenophobia is mostly influenced by the factors as education (the higher the education – the lower the level of xenophobia), the type of settlement (in the village the level of xenophobia is higher than in the city), the region of residence, financial status (the higher the level of wealthness – the lower the level of xenophobia), and age (the level of xenophobia increases with age).
As The Journalist reported, the National Council fined two Odessa TV channels for xenophobia.
