Every year in Ukraine from illnesses caused by smoking 85 thousand people die, said the general director of the public institution «Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine» Volodymyr Kurpita.
«According to the Ministry of Health, every year 85 thousand people in Ukraine die from diseases caused by smoking. Every day 7.2 million of our citizens smoke and who are in this risk group. And they create an additional risk to their family and friends», Kurpita quotes UNN.
In addition, in Ukraine, daily smokers are almost 36% of men and 7% of women.
«And this indicator is decreasing, but not as fast as we would like» – said the Kurpita.
The general director noted that there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke.
«The composition of tobacco smoke includes more than 4 thousand chemical compounds, of which 250 – known harmful, and more than 50 – those that cause cancer. Therefore, smoking is affected not only by smokers directly, but by the people who surround them», the head of the Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine added.
