«We have destroyed our Armed Forces and now we try to create a new ones with the help of the other countries», – said the ex-chief of the General Staff of Ukraine, Anatoly Lopata. In his interview to «The Journalist» he told, why the Ukraine cannot restore the former might of its army again.
«There were statements, that we had no armed forces in independent Ukraine. With full responsibility, I respond: they were, and were such powerful that everybody envied them. The Russian Federation could not even think of any conflict with Ukraine», – said Anatoly Lopata.
According to him, on the time when he left the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the army was about 500 thousand people and has a powerful arsenal of weapons. Now there is not even a hundredth part of this.
«When I left the Armed Forces of Ukraine, we had a military group of 500 thousand people. We had very powerful ground forces, four air armies, an air defense army. We inherited from the Soviet Union 2.5 thousand aircraft. But the State was unable to retain this power. We were forced to cut back what we must not have to cut. For example, weapons. Today we do not have even the one-hundredth part of that quantity what was earlier», – said Mr Lopata.
The military expert believes that as long as our State is not powerful and capable to defend its territory, we will be unable to solve other important tasks.
