Lawyer and journalist Alexei Svyatogor, who is suspected of distributing works that promote the cult of violence and cruelty until July 9 will remain under arrest without the right to make a pledge. It was decided 11th of June during session that took place in Shevchenkovskyi district court of the city of Kyiv.
Although the meeting on the election of a preventive measure to a well-known dog hunter was to begin at 12:00, the representatives of Themis could begin consideration of the case almost after 5 hours. In the morning, a lot of activists, animal rights activists and representatives of the National Corps gathered in and near court building, who demanded to take Svyatogor into custody while his case was being examined at court.
«For many years now we have been trying to stop the movement of the so-called dog hunters. In fact, these people are sick with flayer inclinations that kill thousands of animals that have no shelter and live on the street. Today there will be a court session on the election of a preventive measure against Alexei Svyatogor. People came to court to show the judge that this person should be in the pre-trial detention center for the period of court hearings», said animal rights activist Yulia Petrenko.
Subsequently, just before the beginning of the meeting, a light was turned off in the courtroom, because of which the representatives of Themis could not get down to work.
As the press secretary of the Shevchenkivskyi district court Olga Piven said, it was an unpredictable emergency situation.
«In connection with the emergency situation, which was reported to us in Kyivenergo, the light was turned off in the Shevchenkovskyi court. It was unpredictable for us. Electricity was restored only now. Applications for self-withdrawal will now be considered. After that, the next judge will be appointed», the press secretary explained.
At the same time, it became known that judge Andrei Trubnikov, who was supposed to determine the measure of punishment for Svyatogor, took his self-refusal. The court accepted his decision and appointed a new judge. The case was handed over to Tatiana Levitskaya. However, the doghunter’s lawyer announced the challenge of the newly appointed judge. The prosecution called such actions – delaying the process. The court refused to satisfy the defense’s statement about Levitsky’s challenge.
When the case on the choice of a preventive punishment for Svyahvar was started, the doghunter’s lawyer asked to hold everything in closed mode, supposedly his client is in danger, and a large number of people present in the court put pressure on the parties and the court. However, this solicitor’s request was not granted.
Then judge Levitskaya heard both sides: charges and defense. After that the court made a decision to take Alexei Svyatogor into custody until July 9, 2018 inclusive, without the right to make a pledge. Against the known dog hunter a criminal case has been opened in parts 2 and 3 of Art. 300 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (import, manufacture or distribution of works promoting the cult of violence and cruelty). In the case of proof of his guilt, Svyatogoru will face up to five years in prison.
