“By the will of God” is based on the history of the Roman Catholic priest Bernard Preyna, who was accused of pedophilia from 1986 to 1991. The protagonist of the film, Alexander, a 40-year-old resident of Lyon, learns that the priest who sought it in childhood continues to work in the church. He teams up with his two other victims to get the priest removed.
First, Francois Ozon planned to make a documentary: the story described in the film is real, the events of the scandal unfold in France in our time. In 2016, priest Bernard Prein was charged with harassment against more than 80 boys. The high church officials knew about the crimes: for example, Cardinal Barbaren was already convicted for his many years of silence about the violence in the French Catholic Church, ”said a press release from Arthouse Traffic Company.
