Canadian Ukrainians initiated the signing of a petition recognizing Vyshyvanka Day as an official holiday of the country. This is reported by the founder of World Vyshyvanka Day Lesya Voroniuk:
“The Canadian wing of “World Vyshyvanka Day“ Vyshyvanka Association” (Volodymyr Palagniuk) initiated the signing of the Petition recognizing Embroidery Day as an official holiday of Canada.
April 10, 2019 during a meeting of the House of Commons, the petition was announced by Jim Iglinsky, a conservative deputy from Alberta, a Ukrainian in the third generation, an active lobbyist of Ukraine in Canada and the world.
The document says that “every year thousands of Canadian Ukrainians celebrate Embroidery Day to demonstrate that the embroidered shirt is the national genetic code, a symbol of the struggle for independence, a symbol of faith, hope and love.”
Recall that Vyshyvanka Day is all-Ukrainian national holiday celebrated on the third Thursday of May.
