Some 122 countries supported Australia’s motion for an independent international investigation into the causes of the spread of the coronavirus, The Guardian reports.

The motion was backed by 54 countries in Africa. Voting on the issue will take place on the morning of May 19.

Beijing demonstrated disapproval of Australia’s decision to conduct an investigation by increasing barley taxes and suspending a portion of beef imports from Australia.

European countries and Australia have support a draft EU proposal for “an impartial, independent and comprehensive investigation into the handling of the Covid-19 outbreak.”

This proposal does not mention China or the city of Wuhan, where it is believed the outbreak began. However, according to sources in the Australian government, the EU proposal was harsh enough to allow for a proper and thorough investigation, although they still call it the “first step” to ensure transparency.
