2020 Olympic Games postponed because of coronavirus

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced the postponement of the Summer Olympics Games to 2021 in connection with the pandemic of the coronavirus disease, Reuters reports.

Japan made a relevant proposal to the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, and he supported it. The competition will take place no later than summer 2021.

“In the present circumstances and based on the information provided today by the WHO, the IOC President and the Prime Minister of Japan have concluded that the Games of Olympiad in Tokyo must be rescheduled to a date beyond 2020 but no later than summer 2021, to protect the health of athletes, all participants involved in the Olympic Games and the international community,” the statement reads.
