In the archive of the central library of English city of Bristol, a manuscript of the 13th century was found, containing a previously unknown version of the story about King Arthur and Merlin.
According to The Guardian, historians have found seven pieces of parchment inside books of French scientist of the XV century. The text, handwritten in Old French, tells of the Battle of Trebe, during which Merlin inspired Arthur’s troops with a speech and led the attack, carrying the banner of the Knight of the Round Table of Sir Kay with a dragon that exhaled a real flame.
It is assumed that the manuscript is a version of “Estoire de Merlin” (“The Story of Merlin”), which, in turn, may be part of the cycle of chivalry novels “Lancelot-Graal” or “Vulgata”. It differs from other similar texts in insignificant details, including the names of military leaders, commanders of King Arthur’s forces.
In addition, the text found did not indicate that King Claudas, the enemy of Arthur and Merlin, was wounded in the thigh during the battle.
According to experts, the manuscript may be the version of the “Vulgata”, which the English writer Sir Thomas Malory used as a source for his book Arthur’s Death.
