In the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg all public transport – railways, buses and trams – will be free of charge from March 1, 2020, said the Luxembourg minister of mobility François Bausch. As the head of the department noted, this social measure is “a highlight in the large-scale strategy in the field of transport,” Le Figaro reports.
Free transport will relieve the roads. Every day about 200,000 people from Germany, France, Belgium go to work in the Grand Duchy.
Luxembourg already subsidizes the cost of travel in public transport by almost 90 percent – for EUR 491 million per year. Providing a completely free ride will require additional EUR 40 million per year. The government noted that this initiative is also dictated by environmental and social considerations.
On the railroad, only second-class travel will be free. Who wants to go first class, will still pay the full cost of the ticket.
