Ukraine filed a lawsuit to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) against the Russian Federation in connection with the seizure of Ukrainian ships and sailors in the Kerch Strait.

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Justice and Ukraine’s Commissioner for ECHR Affairs, Ivan Lishchyna.

It is noted that the government complied with the instructions and has filed application No. 55855/18 on January 7.

“The government demands the court to recognize the violation of the rights of 24 Ukrainian seamen by the Russian Federation during an illegal attack on Ukrainian ships, wounding and capturing seamen in the Kerch Strait on November 25, 2018, their illegal detention in penitentiary institutions of the Russian Federation and bringing them to criminal liability,” noted Lishchina.
