On October 25, The European Parliament has urged to ban the sale of the EU weapons to the Saudi Arabia. Deputies proposed to introduce such measures in response to the writer Jamal Khashoggi killing, European truth news agency reported.
The relevent resolution (which does not have a binding force) was backed by 325 deputies, one opposed, 19 abstained. The text of the document states that the European Parliament calls on all the EU member countries to reach a common position regarding the arms trade embargo on Saudi Arabia. In addition, the European Parliament expressed regret over the significant armed agreements concluded between Saudi Arabia and the EU member states, including Spain, France, Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom.
The parliamentarians called for the prohibition (within the whole European Union) of exporting, selling, renewing and servicing any kind of Saudi security equipment that could be used for repression.
MEPs also appealed to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and to the EU member states to be ready to implement purposeful sanctions, including a ban on obtaining visas and freezing assets of those Saudi Arabian citizens who was involved in the murder of a journalist.
