The United States Air Force command has ordered the American company Lockheed Martin to develop a new ultra-long cruise missile, as the Defense Aerospace inform source reported.

The developing JASSM-XR will cost USD 51.1 million. The contract for the development of the weapon also implies the revision of the basic JASSM on-board systems. The work on the creation of a new missile is planned to be completed by September 2023.

An increase in the range of the base weapon will probably be achieved by extending the missile’s body and placing more fuel tanks in it.

Presumably, such a revision will make it impossible to use JASSM-XR with tactical US Air Force aircrafts.

As The Journalist reported, NSDC will provide coastal defense in the Azov and Black Seas with high-precision missiles.
