Leaders of five States signed convention on Caspian Sea status

Presidents of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Russia and Iran have signed convention on the legal status of the Caspian Sea.

Dispute on the document lasted 22 years because of disagreements between the positions of the Caspian states.

The document determined the surface of the Caspian Sea as common and remains it in joint use by the countries. At the same time, the bottom and subsoil are divided by neighboring states into parts in according to the agreement between them on the basis of international law.

In addition, the convention deals with the prohibition of the deployment of armed forces of extra-regional states in the Caspian, Anadolu news agency reported. The Caspian states are also obliged not to provide their territory «for the commission of aggression and other military actions against any of the [contracting] parties.»

Shipping, fishing, scientific research and laying of main pipelines should be carried out according to the rules agreed upon by the parties. When implementing large-scale marine projects, an environmental factor should be taken into account, and all the parties bear responsibility for damage to the ecological system of the Caspian Sea, the document says.
