The Union Council of Ministers of the Republic of India has approved a bill that will punish piracy at sea with death penalty or life in prison, NDTV news agency reported.

The Indian authorities are bringing such a measures because of the recent cases of attacks on merchant ships. It is assumed that the bill should improve the safety of Indian sea shipping, as well as safety of crew members of merchant ships.

Note, that in according with the current legislation of India, maritime piracy is punishable by imprisonment, but this does not stop the perpetrators. Experts believes it is necessary to toughen the legal norms to resolve the problem.
