Tbilisi City Court found former President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili guilty of beating of the deputy of parliament Valeri Gelashvili.
According to the judge’s decision, the ex-president of Georgia was sentenced to six years in prison. Saakashvili is also banned from taking any state post for two years and three months, Georgia Online reports.
It is noted that an armed attack on a Georgian MP took place in 2005. The former president is accused exceeding official powers, violence and deliberate damage to heath.
Along with Saakashvili, the former Interior Minister of Georgia Ivane Merabishvili, former head of the Special Operations Department Erekle Kodua and former head of the department of the same department Gia Siradze were brought to responsibility.
Concerning Merabishvili, Kodua and Siradze, convictions have been made in this case. In particular, the court punished the former Interior Minister for imprisonment for 6 years and 9 months, Erekle Kodua and Gia Siradze – for a period of 9 years.
