The United Nations Security Council by a majority vote blocked rejected a Russian request to discuss the enactment of a Ukrainian language law. The meeting was broadcasted on the UN YouTube channel.
In a procedural vote, six countries voted against the discussion of the Ukrainian law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”: the United States, France, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium and Poland. At the same time, five countries were in favor of the Russian request: China, South Africa, the Dominican Republic and Equatorial Guinea.
Four more states abstained from voting.
Recall, on May 17, the Russian delegation appealed to the Chairman of the UN Security Council with a request to convene a meeting on the Ukraine’s Law “On ensuring the functioning of the Ukrainian language as the state language”.
