Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for European Integration Olena Zerkal said that Ukraine intends to seek to determine the status of the Kerch Strait as international.

She said this on the air of Radio NV.

“It is very important for me to provide status determination of the Kerch Strait as an international strait. This will withdraw many issues which still exist, and legal uncertainty including the question of Russia’s speculations concerning the status of the Kerch Strait as an internal strait. In general, Russia reached the point that only they can control navigation in the Kerch Strait, so it is important for us now to ensure that our interests are represented in international arbitration,” the Deputy Minister noted.

Also, the Deputy Minister stressed the importance of the Treaty between Ukraine and Russia on cooperation in the use of the Azov Sea and the Kerch Strait of 2003.

“Even in recent hearings, the chairman of the tribunal referred to this agreement as an agreement that provides for freedom of navigation in the Kerch Strait. Therefore, I believe that the agreement fulfills its function now, and Ukraine will proceed from the principle of expediency in resolving this issue. The agreement is complementary to the international maritime convention,” Zerkal noted.

As The Journalist reported, Russian Federation has no intention to release Ukrainian POW sailors.
