On June 13, an exhibition dedicated to the memory of the Holodomor opened at the Holocaust Museum in Dnipro. “I still feel ashamed to throw food away. My grandma told me about the Holodomor,” as Radio svoboda  reports.

The exhibition presents dozens of works by the spouses Andrii and Liia Dostlevy, reflecting an unusual view of the problem of memory and post-memory, the traumatic experience of ancestors and its impact on the future generation worldview.

The works are black and white collages that combine the prints of discarded food with landscapes of the Ukrainian hinterland.

“When children we both listened to these stories: how the whole village died out from starvation; about recipes for quail pancakes, how to find food, and the like. It was part of our experience. As an artist, I deal with the theme of psychological trauma. This is my “entry point” because it is a story of my family. Those traces of trauma are not usually visible. It is still inconvenient for me to throw food away. It is called post-memory”, the artist said.

Liia Dostleva is known as an artist, essayist, anthropologist of culture. Participant of art exhibitions in Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands. Andrii Dostlev is an artist, researcher of photography. Since 2012 he lives in Poland. Participant of exhibitions in Ukraine, Poland, the Czech Republic, France, Austria, Italy, Norway, Turkey.
