Four NATO countries – France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States – have signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the Alliance’s Brussels headquarters, which opens up the possibility of expanding satellite communications in the interests of all allies. This was reported by the press service of the North Atlantic Alliance.
“A memorandum between France, Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States enables four Allies to provide space capabilities from their military satellite communications (SATCOM) programs to NATO. These allied countries have already begun to deliver the capability from January 1, 2020,” the report reads.
The use of outer space for such purposes is expected to significantly enhance NATO’s deterrence and defense capabilities.
The mentioned project will replace the previous SATCOM program, which provided relevant services to the Allies in the Alliance in 2005-2019.
