According to the results of serological testing conducted in a small municipality in the Italian province of Bergamo, antibodies to coronavirus were present in 37% of local residents. This information was published by the Italian Corriere Della Sera.

San Giovanni Bianco is a city with a population of 4,800 people in the province of Bergamo in Lombardy, one of those that suffered most during the epidemic. Therefore, local authorities decided to test residents for antibodies to find out how many of them were infected with the coronavirus. The process started on May 25, 1,441 volunteers took part in it.

Initial results showed that 37% of them had a positive antibody test result. The average age of residents with a positive test result is 54 years; 70% of them indicated the presence of coronavirus symptoms.

Another 400 people from the municipality plan to take part in the testing. If 37% will be confirmed at the end of testing, this will be good news, Corriere Della Sera notes.

Epidemiological studies conducted in different countries often give over 5% result. Collective immunity, in which a significant part of the population with antibodies protects the rest, according to experts, occurs when approximately 60% of people have recovered from the virus.
