Germany is preparing to strike back against the United States if President Donald Trump fulfills his threat to impose additional sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, Bloomberg reports.

According to two German officials familiar with the discussions, the of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration is considering pressing for coordinated action by the European Union.

The ministry said in a statement that “such measures by the United States could affect significantly more German and European companies and banks, as well as state agencies.”

The 1,200-kilometer pipeline under the Baltic Sea, designed to pump Russian gas directly to Germany, caused deep division between EU member states.

“But the prospect of direct US intervention in the 27-countries bloc’s energy interests should cause a collective response,” officials said who asked not to be identified.
