For the first time, the EU imposes sanctions against Russia for cyberattacks

For the first time, the European Union introduced cyber sanctions against citizens and structures of Russia, China and North Korea. This was reported by the press service of the EU Council.

“The Council today decided to impose restrictive measures against six individuals and three entities responsible for or involved in various cyber-attacks,” the message reads.

These include attempted cyberattacks against the OPCW (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) and those known as ‘WannaCry’, ‘NotPetya’, and ‘Operation Cloud Hopper’.

This is the first time the EU has introduced such sanctions.

The four Russian citizens hit by EU sanctions include Aleksei Minin, Aleksei Morenets, Yevgeny Serebriakov, and Oleg Sotnikov and the Main Center for Special Technologies of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
