Elections in Belarus: protests across country, clash with police and detentions (PHOTOS)

On August 9, turnout during the presidential election in Belarus stood at 84.05% as of 8:00 p.m..

According to the Central Election Commission of Belarus, the turnout in Minsk was 66.1%, in the Brest region – 91.97%, Vitebsk – 82.73%, Gomel – 89.81%, Grodno – 88.81%, Minsk – 84.53%, Mogilev – 90.44%.

To the data from polling stations, the current president of the republic, Alexander Lukashenko, is ahead with 81.35% of the vote.

“President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is in first place with 28,623 citizens, or 81.35%. On the second – Svetlana Tikhanovskaya with 2,848 votes, or 8%. In third place is Anna Konopatskaya, 688 people voted for her,” the Central Comission noted.

On the eve of the presidential elections in Belarus a wave of protest actions swept across several cities – Minsk, Lida, Baranovichi, Brest, Grodno, Zhodino, Zhlobin, Pinsk and Kobrin, Mediazona reports.

Associated Press photographer Mstislav Chernov was beaten up in Minsk, Euroradio reports.

Journalists Dmitry Kazakevich, Vyacheslav Lazarev and Igor Matveyev were detained in Vitsebsk, the Belarusian Association of Journalists reports.

According to the Viasna human rights center, more than 120 people were detained on the day of the presidential elections in Belarus, including 61 people in Minsk. Among the detainees, Viasna points out, for example, an observer at polling station No. 49, who told her husband that she was detained on suspicion of obstructing the elections, a journalist from the Belsat TV channel, as well as voters who were detained near the polling stations.
