The content of combustion products – formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide – in the Kyiv air has increased in recent days, according to the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration.
According to data from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory, since August 19, an excess of the average daily maximum permissible concentration has been recorded in the air of Kiev, namely, sulfur dioxide on the areas of Bessarabskaya, Demiivskaya, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, Nauki avenue; nitrogen dioxide in the areas of Bessarabskaya, Demiivskaya, Obolon avenue and Lesi Ukrainka boulevard; formaldehyde on the areas of squares Bessarabskaya and Demiivskaya, Obolon avenue, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard.
“Now weather conditions contribute to the accumulation of harmful impurities in the air. There is an area of high pressure with an anticyclone, characterized by a weak wind. These weather conditions impede the mixing of atmospheric layers of air and contribute to the accumulation of pollutants on the surface of the earth,” the Acting Head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration Oleksandr Savchenko.
Kyiv also has a high level of fire risk as more and more fires occur in ecosystems due to the high temperature of the surface air layer and the beginning of the burning of dry vegetation by the population.
