Ukraine has created a working group under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine to introduce an electronic prescription for medicines.
“The work plans include electronic prescriptions for narcotic drugs, insulins, immunosuppressive drugs – 2021; antibiotics – 2022; other prescription drug groups determined by the Ministry of Health – starting in 2023,” the head of the Ministry of Health Maksym Stepanov said.
According to him, such an initiative was introduced by the ministry due to the uncontrolled dispensing of prescription drugs from pharmacies in Ukraine, which leads to the spread of self-medication, and, as a consequence, to the deterioration of public health.
“This problem lies not only in unfair compliance by pharmacies with licensing requirements (dispensing prescription drugs from pharmacies without a prescription), but also in the reluctance of some doctors to write prescriptions as required by the relevant rules. This, in turn, leads to shifting the responsibility for prescribing medicines from doctors to pharmacists and reduces the availability of medicines for the population,” Stepanov said.
