Some 87 big companies of various sectors of the economy are pledging to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The total market capitalization of these companies is more than USD 2.3 trillion, Reuters reported.
For several months, dozens of companies had joined the We Mean Business, initiative by the coalition of human rights groups, which aims to spur faster action on climate change.
The coalition was launched in June with a call to action by the United Nations, business and civil society leaders. Some companies have agreed to reduce their carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. Among these companies are the Swiss food company Nestle, as well as the French building materials company Saint-Gobain and French cosmetics maker L’Oreal.
