Amazon to invest USD 530 mln in developing unmanned cars

Amazon online store intends to invest more than half a billion dollars (USD 530 million) in the startup of Aurora Innovation company. The latter is engaged in development of automotive autopilot technology under the guidance of former engineers of Google, Tesla and Uber, New time reports.

The investment became Amazon’s first public statement about a partnership with an enterprise that develops autopilot technologies for passenger cars.

“Amazon’s unique knowledge, capabilities, and perspectives will be useful for fulfilling our mission,” Aurora wrote in her blog.

It is known that the startup was founded in 2016 by the former head of the Google autonomous machines program, Chris Urmson. Later, he was joined by Tesla’s autopilot team Sterling Anderson and the head of the same unit in Uber, Drew Bagnell.
