Ambassador of Ukraine to Germany Andriy Melnyk has commented on the reluctance of German skeptics to recognize the Holodomor in Ukraine as genocide.
“The fact that the Bundestag for the first time began a large-scale public review of recognizing the Holodomor is a kind of quantum leap itself. Indeed, this painful for every Ukrainian topic still remains – frankly speaking – a ‘tabula rasa’ for the German public and political circles,” UNIAN quotes Melnyk, as saying.
To the Ukrainian diplomat, the enormous impact these parliamentary hearings themselves will have on public opinion in Germany should not be underestimated.
“Of course, it is difficult to predict what decision regarding the recognition of the Holodomor will the Bundestag made. I would like to emphasize: it is the parliament, not the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany should accept it,” Melnyk emphasized.
The ambassador said that “in the coming weeks we intend to strengthen close personal contacts with members of the petition committee, as well as with the representatives of all factions, with no exception, in order to provide comprehensive answers to all open questions.”
Melnyk is convinced that nothing prevents the Bundestag from making a fair decision on recognizing the Holodomor in Ukraine as genocide.
The historical truth is on Ukrainian side, and the Holodomor directly affects Germany itself, which, according to archive documents, was well aware of the gigantic scale of Stalinist crimes in Ukraine in 1932-33.
As The Journalist reported, Germany does not recognize Holodomor as genocide in Ukraine, despite the petition.
