Chairman of the Board of NJSC Naftogaz of Ukraine, Andriy Kobolev, said that the Russian company Gazprom cannot afford another gas supply shut-off to Ukraine.

“Gazprom have no time to build and launch bypass gas pipelines before the contract  will expire. Gazprom will not be able to cut off gas supply to Ukraine as it was in 2009: it is Gazprom owes money to Naftogaz, and not vice versa,” said Kobolev.

According to the head of Naftogaz, the Ukrainian government, in cooperation with Western partners, is working on to additionally pump 3 billion cubic meters of gas to storage in case of failure resolving the situation with Gazprom.

Kobolev also responded to the Russian statement on Ukraine’s “virtual” gas reverse from Europe, taking away Russian gas that does not leave the country.

“In this case, the volumes of gas are transported physically from Ukraine to the EU and in the opposite direction. This caused by fact that Gazprom establishes its own conditions on interconnectors with the EU, ignoring the legislation of both the EU and Ukraine. Therefore, we cannot unite our gas market with the EU,” the head of Naftogaz is convinced.

Kobolev also stressed that, in addition to collecting USD 2.8 billion from Gazprom, Ukraine requires another USD 12 billion from the company.

As The Journalist reported, Groysman, Kobolev agreed to reduce regulated gas prices for households.
