Interior Minister Arsen Avakov has said that the government could impose a ban on long-distance and rail traffic if the situation with the spread of coronavirus worsens in the country, RBC-Ukraine reports.

Avakov clarified that at the moment the government does not have an exact answer regarding a possible ban, but this issue is being discussed.

“If we see that communication between cities will carry real harm and a real spread of infection, then we must block this communication,” the Interior Minister said.

Avakov also said that it is necessary to introduce a lockdown as soon as possible throughout Ukraine for a period of at least three weeks.

“My personal point of view is that it is necessary to introduce a lockdown as quickly as possible. From three to four weeks’ duration. There is no need to hide behind political slogans or some convenient formulations, because we are talking about large systemic risks to the health of our people,” the minister stressed.

According to Avakov, as soon as the Cabinet of Ministers prepares compensation programs for business, a lockdown will be introduced to interrupt the chain of coronavirus incidence.
