Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said that the current president, Petro Poroshenko, may be summoned for questioning in corruption cases (reported by the media) after the end of his presidential term.
Avakov said this during his speech at the 12th Kyiv Security Forum.
In particular, Avakov was asked whether criminal proceedings will be opened after expiration of [Poroshenko’s] presidential term for an objective assessment as part of the pre-trial investigation of the president’s involvement in corruption offenses, reported by the media.
The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs expressed his opinion that this is a rhetorical question, because there is no Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko next to him to answer this question.
“I have no rights to do that. I’m just a political minister. I think that, if there are grounds, we have sufficient institutions that can open proceedings against a citizen who was the president once. This is normal procedure,” said Avakov.
“I regularly go to interrogations, Arseniy Yatsenyuk [leader of the Popular Front party, former prime minister – ed.] regularly goes to interrogations. The last time I was interrogated about the attempted assassination of Yanukovych, at the request of Mr. Yanukovich, which he sent from Moscow in 2014. If he is guilty – he will be responsible, if not – everything will be calm,” said Avakov.
As The Journalist reported, prosecutor Kulik told how the Kurchenko’s case materials disappeared.
